Earth, Breath, Light: Corazón Emplumado is where Chicanismo meets indigenous cosmology, where the dignity of the Pachuco is proclaimed in Nahuatl, English, and Spanish, immersing the reader into both ancient symbolism and colonizer’s lexicon.
Jorge Montaño invites the reader on a spiritual journey from the urban barrio to the ancestral depths of the Indigenous lands we inhabit, dropping seeds of wisdom along the way: "love consults not with fear but flirts with the sacrifice of self.” Throughout the collection, our Earth Mother is often represented as a woman, fierce and loving, with the ability to support the healing of ancient wounds.
The author weaves a spiritual landscape with imagery of earth, sun, wind, flowers, hummingbirds, copal smoke, feathers, and starry skies– encouraging the reader to remember, resist, and rise: “I have remembered my name. I have heard the wind. It says to resist!”
About the Author: Jorge Montaño is a self-taught Chicano writer raised in Pacoima, now residing in Santa Barbara. His poetry is inspired by the Nahua concept "in xochitl, in cuicatl" or "flor y canto." Three of his poems have been published in La Raiz Magazine. His first published poem,"Sangre Indígena," appeared in La Raíz Magazine, for which he was awarded the 2022 La Raíz Poetry Prize. One of Jorge Montaño’s goals is to teach Chicano studies. His book Earth, Breath, Light: Corazón Emplumado, published by La Raíz Press, is his first collection of poetry.
